What are the conditions for hunting Halal locusts? The Grand Ayatollah Safi’s Fatwa

SHAFAQNA – The Grand Ayatollah Safi issued Fatwa regarding hunting/catching Halal locusts.

  1. If locust is caught alive by hand or another tool, after it is dead, it is Halal to eat. And it is not necessary for the person who catches it to be Muslim, and/or to mention God’s name at the time of catching it. But if a dead locust is in the hand of a disbeliever, and it is not clear it has been caught alive or not, even if he says he caught it alive, it is not Halal; unless it becomes certain, or two witnesses, say that he tells the truth.
  2. Eating a locust that its wings have not come out, and cannot fly, is Haram.
