Grand Ayatollah Sistani’s envoy says ISIS not related to Islam

Ayatollah Sistani's envoy meets with Chairman of parliament of Bosnia and Herzegovina

SHAFAQNA- A special representative of the Shia marja’a Grand Ayatollah Seyed Ali al-Sistani on a visit to Bosnia has spoken about the role of the Shia religious authority in the internal affairs of Iraq.

Seyed Jawad Shahrestani who was meeting the Chairman of the House of Peoples of Bosnia and Herzegovina said European Muslims should help the West understand that crimes committed by ISIS have nothing to do with real Islam and ISIS terrorists are not Muslims.

He added that the extremist group wrecked sheer havoc and all its actions ran contrary to the Islamic principle, one of which warns against the destruction of mosques and places of worship. Shahrestani praised first Bosnian President Ali Izetbegovic (1996-2000) as an influential figure in the political scene of Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as the Balkans Peninsula.

Chairman of the Bosnian Parliament Bakir Izetbegovic for his turn said people in Europe have now come to the fact that ISIS and likes have nothing to do with Islam. The Bosnian politician noted that although Bosnian and Herzegovina is a small Muslim nation, it managed to portray the merciful image of Islam during the 1992-1995 Bosnian War. He described Jawad Shahrestani’s trip to Bosnian and Herzegovina as an important step that would strengthen the bond between Muslim nations.

Later in their talks, Shahrestani detailed Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani’s political ideology. He said the ayatollah believes nations should decide their own fate. He further said the marja’yia contributed at four junctures of the recent history of Iraq, which included the writing of the new Constitution of Iraq; mediating between American occupying forces and anti-occupation Shia groups who had taken shelter in the holy shrine of Imam Ali in Najaf in 2004 and preventing an imminent bloodshed. His mediation efforts took place despite his frail health condition. Preventing ISIS to take over large parts of Iraq by issuing a short but very significant fatwa; during the 2018 Kurdistan Referendum for separation from Iraq, the grand ayatollah asked all Iraqi factions to act according to the Constitutional Law.

Shahrestani added that today the world knows the importance and influence of such a religious authority that could have unique and long-lasting effects on the political and social life of Iraq, the Middle East and even the entire world.

At the end, the Iranian ambassador to Sarajevo who had also attended this meeting, said Ayatollah Sistani in Iraq, founder of Islamic Republic late Ayatollah Rouhollah Khomeini and the current Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei in Iran, all have focused their efforts on unity among Muslims and spared no effort in uniting Muslims sects worldwide.
