SHAFAQNA- A new banner welcoming pilgrims to the holy city of Medina, Saudi Arabia, has become controversial after people noticed that one of the “Welcome” phrases written on the banner is in Hebrew, the official language of Israel.
The word סלאם or Shalom that means peace in Hebrew could be easily seen on the billboard. While Saudi citizens on social media websites angered and reacted negatively to the banner, Israeli news websites and social media users welcomed the move by distributing its images. Saudi users argue that, there was no need to welcome pilgrims in Hebrew as non-Muslims are not allowed into Medina, the city where the Prophet Mohammad has been buried and Nabawi mosque is located.
