SHAFAQNA- Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei in a new speech restates his fatwa on non-proliferation and irrelevancy of atomic weapons.
According to Shafaqna, Ayatollah Khamenei who was addressing a group of university teachers and academics in Tehran said, “Despite our great scientific capabilities, we are not seeking nuclear arms and consider them as haram based on fiq’h and religious reasoning”.
Ayatollah Khamenei further noted, “We even reject building and stockpiling nuclear weapons as an irrational and illogical move, because they would cost the country dearly while we will never use them.”
The Iranian leader stated, “We oppose atomic arms, but that does not mean we do not need nuclear enrichment, as it is necessary to the country’s future. If we do not boost our (enrichment) capabilities now, we should start from zero a decade from now.”
Of note, Ayatollah Khamenei issued a significant fatwa (edict) on April 10, 2010 ahead Tehran International Conference on Disarmament and Non-Proliferation that added another dimension to Iran’s aversion to build nuclear warheads. His fatwa reads “We believe that besides nuclear weapons, other types of weapons of mass destruction such as chemical and biological weapons also pose a serious threat to humanity. The Iranian nation which is itself a victim of chemical weapons feels more than any other nation the danger that is caused by the production and stockpiling of such weapons and is prepared to make use of all its facilities to counter such threats. We consider the use of such weapons as haram and believe that it is everyone’s duty to make efforts to secure humanity against this great disaster.”
Elsewhere he explained, “Both shar’i and aqli [logic and reason] fatwas dictate that atomic arms should be banned.
