Iraq: Civilians killed in Baghdad blast at Shia mosque

SHAFAQNA- A suicide bomb blast at a Shia mosque in eastern Baghdad killed at least 10 people and wounded 30 others on Friday.

According to Shafaqna, Iraqi security officials say another 30 people were wounded in the blast that hit Imam Mahdi al Muntadhar Mosque in Baladiyat neighbourhood, near the densely-populated district of Sadr City.

“At least one attacker wearing a belt of explosives tried to enter the building but was stopped by the guards, and detonated himself outside,” said one officer, trtworld reported.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility. but it bears the hallmark of such attacks carried out by the Daesh Takfiri terror group, presstv told.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyed Abbas Mousavi strongly condemned a recent terrorist attack on a Shiite mosque in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad that killed nearly a dozen people and injured many others.

In a statement released on Saturday, Mousavi denounced the terrorist blast that hit Imam Mahdi al-Muntadhar Mosque in al-Baladiyat neighborhood in the eastern flank of Baghdad near the densely-populated district of Sadr City.

He further expressed condolences to the Iraqi people and government as well as the bereaved families of victims over the tragic incident, en.abna24 reported.

Turkey strongly condemned Friday’s terror attack in Iraq’s capital Bagdad that killed at least 10 people, aa mentioned.

“It was sadly learned that people have been killed and injured, as a result of a suicide bomb attack at a mosque in the Baladiyat district of Baghdad,” said a statement by the Turkish Foreign Ministry.

In 2017, Iraq declared victory against the Daesh terrorist group.

Iraq has witnessed a rare period of relative calm in recent months after decades of back-to-back conflict, including years of violence that regularly saw dozens killed in explosions in Baghdad.

The improved security situation has led officials to dismantle the concrete blast walls, barbed wire, and checkpoints that had become ubiquitous in Baghdad. But occasional hit-and-run attacks have continued.

Last month, at least eight people were killed and 15 wounded in a suicide bombing at a market in eastern Baghdad, according to Aljazeera.

In November, explosions in several Shia-majority districts killed six people, most of them civilians.
