Al-Azhar University expels 71 students for riots

SHAFAQNA- Al-Azhar University expelled 71 of its students on Wednesday for their role in riots and protests taking place on campus over the past several months.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the university administration said it decided to expel the students after it was proved that they were involved in acts of violence on campus.

The statement added that young men among the expelled students are being reported to the Egyptian armed forces to enroll in the military.

Al-Azhar University has witnessed a wave of protests and violent clashes between the anti-regime students and security forces since the ouster of the Islamist President in July 2013.

Thousands of students have been arrested and stood trial in accordance with the protest law, while dozens of others have been expelled for their involvement in protests in the past few months in accordance with the Supreme Council of Universities’ decision to expel students and staff members involved in violence.
