Al Khalifa forces arrest Bahraini Shiite cleric

SHAFAQNA – Bahraini Shiite cleric Sheikh Mahmoud al-Ali has been arrested after a Manama court upheld a previous 6-month jail sentence against him.

The cleric is the vice-president of Bahrain’s largest Shiite religious and cultural organization, the Islamic Scholars’ Council, which was dissolved last year by order of the kingdom’s ministry of justice.

The group was accused of illegal fundraising and money laundering – charges that it vehemently denies.

The organization’s chairman Sayed Majeed Al Meshaal has also been jailed and sentenced to a lengthy prison term.
