Ammar Hakim: Region cannot tolerate more conflicts

SHAFAQNA – Chairman of Iraqi National Coalition Ammar Hakim here expressed concern over US missile attack on a Syrian airfield, underscoring that the region could not tolerate any more conflicts.

Hakim made the remarks in a statement announced late Friday, calling for conducting an impartial, transparent and logical investigation on alleged use of chemical weapons in Syrian Khan Shaykhun near Idlib.

He also added Iraq strongly condemns the real users of chemical weapons in the region. Hakim also invited all sides in Syria to come to peace and settle disputes through political approaches.

“We believe that the escalation of crisis and tensions would affect the entire world and serve the interests of Daesh terrorists,” the statement reads.

According to Western media, the US launched dozens of cruise missiles Thursday night on a Syrian airfield in response to the alleged use of chemical weapons in Khan Shaykhun.

Two US warships in the Mediterranean Sea fired 59 Tomahawk missiles intended for a single target – Shayrat Airfield in Homs province in western Syria, the US Defense Department said.

In the meantime, the emergency meeting of the United Nations (UN) Security Council ended on Wednesday (April 6) without voting for the Western countries’ plan to condemn Syria for its alleged use of chemical weapons in Khan Shaykhun.

The recent attack is considered as the first US direct invasion on Syria during Trump tenure. The missile attack was carried out without the permission from UNSC and the US Congress. Syria strongly denies role in Idleb chemical attack.

Syrian military forces are fighting against Daesh terrorists in the east of Homs province and the Takfiri group, formerly known as al-Nusra Front, in north of the country.
