SHAFAQNA – TO BETTER UNDERSTAND WHY SO MANY MUSLIMS CONTINUE YEAR AFTER YEAR TO JOIN IN THE ASHURA PROCESSION TO MARK THE MARTYRDOM OF IMAM HUSSAIN IBN ALI – GRANDSON TO THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD AND THIRD IMAM OF ISLAM SHAFAQNA ASKED PARTICIPANTS TO SHARE THEIR THOUGHTS.
REZA ALI HUSSAIN – “Every year for the past 5 years I’ve travelled to London from Brighton to attend the Ashura procession to number one pay my respect to Imam Hussain, number two to actively confront religious prejudices. Islam has been blamed for terrorism when in fact Islam denounces terrorism. It’s important for us as a community to come out and stand by our principles.”
ZAHRA AL YOUSSEFI – “I wanted to make a stand against Terror and I could not think of a better way or better day to do it. Imam Hussain is the greatest hero of all time and him message needs to be heard.”
HUSSAIN ALI ABBAS – “There is no greater honour but to walk in the footsteps of our Imams. Imam Hussain is everything you need to know about Islam: compassion, courage, resilience, love, tolerance, justice. I came so that I could add my voice to those who honour his memory.”
MUHAMMAD KARIM – “This is my first time and the procession and I’m very happy I came. I brought my friends from Uni with me as well. They are Sunni and I felt it was important for me to share my tradition with them and introduce them to Imam Hussain.”
AMEENA KHAN – “I don’t consider myself a Sunni or a Shia but today I wanted to show support to my community and Imam Hussain for all the values he inspired and embodied. He was killed for not giving in to tyranny and it matters. We have to remember our martyrs and our heroes if we want to learn and grow as a community.”
MAYMWNA AL HAKIM – “I came here today to say NO to extremism, NO to ISIS, NO to tyranny and NO to intolerance. I also came here to say YES to Imam Hussain, YES to AhlulBayt and YES to the tradition of the Prophet Muhammad.”
