According to some reports, the stampeded may have been caused by peopling rushing to collect fake money thrown from a nearby building. Chinese state media and witnesses have said the incident at Chen Yi Square was partly caused when people scrambled for coupons that looked like dollar bills thrown out of the window of a bar on the third floor of a building overlooking the Bund.
