Bahrain Jails 11 over Security Claims

SHAFAQNA – Bahrain on Sunday jailed 11 people for 15 years each over an alleged attack on a police station in a village that left four policemen wounded, the prosecutor’s office claimed. The court in Manama also jailed a 12th defendant for seven years, said prosecutors. The 12 were accused of taking part in an attack in October in the village of Aaly, near the capital Manama, during which petrol bombs were lobbed at a police station.

Bahrain’s BNA state news agency said the men were charged with “premeditated murder”, possession of explosives and starting a fire “for terrorist purposes”, as well as unlawful assembly. People of the Bahraini Kingdom, which is home to the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet, launched a peaceful revolution in February 2011, demanding social reform and democracy. At least 89 people have been killed in clashes with security forces, while hundreds have been arrested and put on trial for taking part in the demonstrations, human rights groups say.
