What is the best way of spending money?

SHAFAQNA – It is narrated from Abu Dhar (RA) [the great companion of the Prophet of Islam (PBUH) and Imam Ali (AS)] who said: Summarize the world in two Dirhams (unit of currency of the time); one Dirham for your family, and send forth the other Dirham for your hereafter; and know that the third Dirham is harmful for you and you will never find a need for that [1]. In simple terms, this narration is saying that, divide all your earnings/wealth in the world into two parts; and do not allow for a third part. One part which you spend for yourself and your family and this is necessary and Wajib; and the other part which you spend for your hereafter. If you find a third part, a third way of spending, this causes harm and has no benefit; for example those who are wealthy or middle class spend a lot of money on unnecessary things; for example in their wedding ceremonies they spend excessive amount of money on things which are not necessary. These expenses have no benefit for themselves or other people and they are not spent in the way of God. These are just ostentatious shows and these are the harmful aspects which Abu Dhar (RA) meant.
