Can we benefit from experience of others?

SHAFAQNA – Without doubt it is necessary for any wise person to consult with other knowledgeable and wise people in order to add to his/her knowledge [1]. Some people may think, they must consult with someone who is as wise as or wiser than themselves. But what happens if such a person cannot be found? The late Allamah Majlesi (RA) narrated from one of the companions of Imam Ali ibn Musa Al-Ridha/Reza (AS) who said: I was with Imam (AS), and his father (Imam Al-Kazim (AS)) was mentioned. Imam Ridha (AS) said: My father’s wisdom could not be compared with other people, but despite that, sometimes he used to consult with some of his subordinates/servants. Some people asked Imam Al-Kazim: Why do you consult with such a person? Imam (AS) replied: Perhaps, Allah (SWT) has placed the solution of the problem on his tongue [2].
