SHAFAQNA – The Grand Ayatullah Seyyed Ali Sistani has answered some questions about chewing gum during the fast. Recently, a misquoted version of this fatwa was turned into a pretext for Wahhabi networks to slander the Shia righteous school. It is best for believers to refer to their own religious reference to receive the legal decision on their affairs.
Question: One of your fatwas, rules that chewing gum would not annul the fast. Does it include only the gums which release no flavor, or all kinds of gum sold in the market?
Answer: There is no problem with chewing a gum during the fast, although the chewer may taste a flavor, but only insofar as the gum does not have particles to be swallowed and the flavor is not released from the gum’s particles. But if it has particles which spread in the saliva, it is necessary to avoid chewing it or swallowing the saliva which contains the particles. In case there are no particles or substance to be swallowed, there is no problem in chewing it.
