Donation to Manchester Muslim-Jewish forum was ‘wonderful surprise’

SHAFAQNA - Interfaith relations in Manchester were bolstered this week after the Muslim-Jewish forum in the city were awarded a donation.

Members of the the Prestwich Carnival Committee presented the co-chair of the Muslim-Jewish Forum of Greater Manchester with the donation alongside six local charities – recognised as ‘good causes.’

They were nominated by Harvey Hurwitch, a resident of Prestwich, but according to the group, none of the members of the executive committee knew until a couple of days before.

The donation of £100 was handed to the forum by the chairman of the Prestwich Carnival Committee, and will be put the running of the forum, and a number of events in October.

Heather Fletcher, co-chair of the Muslim-Jewish forum said: “This donation came as a wonderful surprise to us all. It is an honour to be awarded a monetary prize and to receive recognition in this way from the local community in Prestwich for our work.

Fletcher added how “it is important in the current climate with the rise in anti-Semitism and hate crimes against Muslims that we continue our vital work connecting the Muslim and Jewish communities as it is ignorance which causes intolerance but familiarisation and mixing together which creates understanding and harmony”.

Mohammed Amin, another co-chair of the Interfaith group added: “This donation was received in the year we celebrated our 10th anniversary. It is wonderful recognition of the work we have done in the last decade bringing Muslims and Jews in Greater Manchester closer together.”

The presentation took place on 30 July, St. Mary’s Park, Prestwich.
