Eastern Ukraine: Clashes leave 5 dead

SHAFAQNA (Shia International News Association) – At least five people have been killed during clashes between government troops and pro-Russia forces in eastern Ukraine over the past 24 hours, authorities say.

According to PressTv an elderly man was killed by a shell that hit his house near the town of Popasne in the Luhansk region, the pro-Kiev governor of the region, Hennadiy Moskal, said Saturday.

In another confrontation, a border guard lost his life when his convoy came under attack approximately 20 kilometers south of Donetsk, a military official said.

In a separate incident, hospital officials in Donetsk confirmed that three civilians were killed and four sustained injuries on Friday as a result of ongoing military activities in the region.

The fighting comes despite a Russian-brokered ceasefire signed on September 5.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has announced plans to meet his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, in the Italian city of Milan next week.

Ukraine’s mainly Russian-speaking regions in the east have witnessed deadly clashes between pro-Moscow forces and the Ukrainian army since Kiev launched military operations to silence pro-Russians in mid-April.

Violence intensified in May after the Donetsk and Lugansk regions held local referendums, in which their residents voted overwhelmingly in favor of independence from Ukraine.

According to a newly-released report by the United Nations, more than 3,600 civilians have been killed and nearly 9,000 others injured during the armed clashes.
