Egypt bars preacher Muhammad Jibril from travel

SHAFAQNA - Egyptian authorities on Wednesday barred a prominent preacher from travel, one day after delivering a prayer in which he called for punishing “tyrants,” a security source said.

Preacher Mohamed Jibreel was barred by Cairo Airport authorities from boarding a London-bound flight, the source told Anadolu Agency.

Jibril angered Egyptian authorities on Monday after he called during prayer for a divine punishment for “those who tyrannized, shed blood and orphaned children.” He made no mention of Sisi, despite the ban.

The prayer prompted the Ministry of Religious Endowments to ban the soft-spoken preacher from leading prayer at all ministry-run mosques.

The ministry has also filed a complaint against preacher, accusing him of supporting “extremism.”

Egypt has been in the throes of turmoil since the ouster of democratically elected President Mohamed Morsi by the military in a 2013 coup.
