Eid Al-Fitr

SHAFAQNA-

The introduction of fasting in the month of Ramadan began from 2 A.H.  Eid in Islam is not only celebration but that Muslims should devote this day to worship and plead Allah to accept their deeds and forgive their sins.  On this day, the doors of Allah’s pardon are kept open with his bountiful blessings.

Â
Fitra is obligatory to anyone who can afford it and it is a sin not to give it.  Fitra depends on major items of food consumed by a person during the year.  These may be rice, wheat, barley, dates, etc.  Fitra should be three kilogram per person.  It is also accepted to pay cash replacing these foods.  It is obligatory for the head of the family to give Fitra of all persons (including servants of both genders of any status)  that take food in his house.  Fitra must be given even for the infant who fed only on milk.  If a guest, Muslim of non-Muslim arrives at one’s house before the night of Eid Al-Fitr and dines with the host, it is compulsory to give Fitra on that guest.  If the guest arrives after sunset of the night of Eid Al-Fitr, Fitra is not obligatory even if he dines with the host.  Even if the guest arrives before sunset and does not dine, it obligatory on the host to pay.  In this case, it is better if both the host and the guest pay Fitra.  If one’s wife is at her parents’ house on the night of Eid Al-Fitr, then they pay for her.  On the last day of Ramadan a person makes a Majlis which finisher after sunset, and he offers food to his guests, he does not pay Fitr for them.  Fitra is given to deserving Momins those who do not have enough income to support his family of the whole year.  Fitra can not be given to the person one depends on.  It is better to give to independent deserving relatives, then next are deserving neighbors and then orphans, widows, and other pious people.  Fitra from Syeds can be given to Syeds or non-Syeds; but non-Syeds cannot give Fitra to Syeds.  If deserving people are not present in the area, Fitra should be sent to places where these people are found.  Also it may be sent to a Mujtahid who distribute the amount properly.  It is not necessary for the person receiving the Fitra be just (Aadil) but it is essential to ensure that the Fitra will not be used in ways of sin such as gambling and liquor.  It is preferable to distribute the Fitra in the local area but it is permissible to send the Fitra to another place.  Fitra must be given between the night of the Eid-al-Fitr to the noon of the Eid.  If for some reason it is not possible to give Fitra at this time, it should be set aside from the rest of the person’s money so later it may be distributed when deserving people are available or be sent to a Mujtahid.
