SHAFAQNA – Senior officials in the European Parliament have denied knowledge of a visit of members of the European Parliament to Bahrain, to observe the coming elections.
Local media in Bahrain has reported that 3 MEP’s have arrived in Bahrain in order to “see the electoral process” and visit electoral candidates, as reported by the Gulf Daily News. However, official sources within the European Parliament have confirmed that this delegation is not an official one and does not represent the institution.
The European Parliament does have an official “Election Observation Unit”, but this body was not made aware of the visit, nor have they sanctioned it.
This comes within the massive efforts made by the authorities in Bahrain to legitimise this electoral process, including through the use of international institutions and individuals. The European Parliament has regularly passed legislation condemning human rights violations in Bahrain and calling for greater reforms and is considered by the people of Bahrain as an ally in the quest for democratic rule.
