Fasting and exams: The Grand Ayatollah Sistani’s answer

SHAFAQNA – The Grand Ayatollah Sistani answered a question about fasting and exams.

Question: Can a person who must sit an important exam, not fast, in order that he/she is able to pass it well?

The Grand Ayatollah Sistani: Continuing with studies is not a justification for not fasting. But if supposedly leaving studies causes hardship to the extent which cannot be tolerated, and there is no possibility of studying and fasting; after having the intention of fasting in case is in severe suffering, can eat and drink to the necessary amount, but must not eat or drink to become full, and then do Qadha fasting and Kaffarah is not Wajib for such a person. Of course can travel before noon for 22 Kilometres and eat there because of being a passenger, and then return, and fasting for that day is no longer valid, and must only do Qadha fasting.
