FBI:US faces serious threats by homegrown extremists

SHAFAQNA (Shia International News Association)- The Federal Bureau of Investigation has warned that homegrown violent extremists radicalized online pose a serious threat to the United States.

The danger is a nationwide menace which is “a problem wherever there are troubled souls with access to the Internet and that is everywhere in this great country of ours,” FBI Director James Comey said in New York on Monday.

Tracking down those inspired by the ISIL terrorist group is “extremely difficult and something we spend every single day working on,” Comey told a conference on counter-terrorism at Fordham Law School.

He said these individuals are radicalized through online propaganda without meeting Al-Qaeda members and are able to commit terrorist acts “without ever actually leaving their basement or bedroom”.

They can obtain everything they need on the Internet to commit their crimes in the US, he said, asking Americans to report any dubious change of behavior they may notice in anyone.

Corney went on to say that the threat is represented by people of all ages, different ethnic backgrounds and all walks of life.

He also warned mobile and internet companies against their decision to encrypt all customers’ data, noting the move would make it even more difficult for security forces to track down terrorists.

The ISIL terrorists, who were initially trained by the CIA in Jordan in 2012 to destabilize the Syrian government, now control large swaths of territory in Iraq and Syria.

US warplanes have been conducting airstrikes against ISIL in Iraq since early August and in Syria since late September. Some Western and Arab states have also participated in some of the strikes in Iraq and Syria.
