SHAFAQNA (Shia International News Association) – According to Greek sources rescue operation was in progress in waters off the west coast of Greece Sunday (28 Dec.) after a fire broke out on a ferry carrying 478 people. The rescue operation coordinated by Greek, Italian and Albanian authorities, taking place some 45 miles off the Greek island of Corfu. The Italian-flagged Norman Atlantic car ferry was in Italian waters, a Greek government official said. It was traveling from the Greek city of Igoumenitsa to Italy’s Ancona when the fire broke out in the ferry’s garage, which has more than 200 cars on board.
“It is one of the most difficult operations we have encountered,” said Merchant Marine Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis. “There are also difficulties in communications.” “We are on fire and the vessel is sinking,” passenger Nikos Papatheodosiou told privately owned Greek television station Mega. “The fire is spreading. There is a hailstorm and it is raining.”
