Frozen, Candy Crush Saga, and Facebook dominate Google Play downloads in 2014

SHAFAQNA – Elsa the Snow Queen is also ruling the kingdom of Google Play. Frozen was the most popular album and movie of this year in the Play Store, according to Google’s tabulation of digital favorites.

Google is highlighting the top apps, games, books, movies, and newsstand articles in a splashy infographic on its Android blog. Most of the winners aren’t huge surprises, like Facebook as the most popular social media app and Candy Crush Saga as the number one game. Pandora was the top music download (a little surprising it wasn’t Spotify) and NFL Mobile ruled the sports selection.

The fastest growing app category is Health and Fitness, a sign of the increasing popularity of wearable devices.

The Walking Dead was the top TV show, and Toy Story was singled out as the “Comeback Movie” for the year. The most popular Newsstand articles were rather disappointing, dominated by list-type stories such as “50 More Awesome Facts (About Everything).”

The story behind the story: This annual list is another way for Google to tout the popularity of its own digital storefront. Google Play has been slowly catching up to Apple’s App Store in downloads and revenue. As Android moves to wearables, cars, and TV sets, it needs a robust app ecosystem to convince you to go all in.
