SHAFAQNA- The Turkish religious authority Diyanet has organized a three-day conference entitled “The Future of Muslims in Europe” in Cologne.

Representatives of Islamic religious communities from Germany and Europe, academics, activists and journalists gathered for the second meeting of European Muslims with the theme “The Future of Muslims in Europe”.

The aim of the meeting, which was attended by 80 representatives from 18 countries, was to contribute the cooperation between religious institutions in Europe, to promote the exchange of knowledge and experience, to offer religious services and religious education in a healthy way, and to tackle it to define current problems.

Ali Erbaş, the Chairman of the Turkish Religious Authority Diyanet in his opening speech spoke about the situation of Muslims and the increasing Islamophobia in Europe. For Erbaş, the world resembles a big house. It is unthinkable that the fire in one floor, not affect the other floors.

“Increasing Islamophobia and racist movements are threatening peaceful coexistence in a plural society,” explains Erbaş. Muslims are part of European society. For this reason, they should exercise their rights when subjected to violence, discrimination or injustice.

Erbaş also points out that Islamophobia arises from lack of knowledge. Nevertheless, he also takes the Muslims to the duty. Muslims in Europe must strive to explain Islam more fully and to correct misconceptions, perceptions and information.

Erbaş quotes a tradition of the Prophet, in which it is said that a Muslim is someone the other people are safe from his hand (action) and his tongue (words).

During the meeting, the following topics were discussed: “Future of Muslims in Europe: Opportunities and Risks”, “Structural Problems of Islamic Institutions in Europe and Legal Processes”, “Negative Effects of Religiously Motivated Movements on Muslims”, “Refugees and Construction of Identity, A New Muslim Generation “,” Strategies Against Negative Perception of Islam in the European Media “.

During the conference, an 18-point plan was prepared.

As a result, it is important for Muslims to come together and provide answers to religious questions and issues arising from the development of societies, such as the standardization of the prayer calendar, the standardization of halal foods, the development of teaching materials, etc., with the help of long and to discuss rich Islamic tradition.

In the face of growing Islamophobia in Europe, the 18-point plan calls for a fair treatment of Muslims and Islam by the media.

In order to consolidate and simplify communication among European Muslims, the establishment of a coordination office is planned. It will include representatives of religious communities, scientists, lawyers, and sociologists. Finally, it was announced that the meeting would be held every two years.
