Good Friday

SHAFAQNA – When we remember the sufferings and pains of Imam Al-Hussein we cannot forget the pains and sufferings of Jesus Christ that are commemorated on the Good Friday. Although we do not believe that Christ (a.s.) was killed or crucified, he nevertheless was tortured and had to endure severe hardships for the sake of the Message. He was prosecuted like Imam Al-Hussein (a.s.) was, and he asked the same question to his people: “But when Jesus became conscious of their disbelief, he cried: ‘Who will be my helpers in the cause of Allah?’ The disciples said: ‘We will be Allah’s helpers. We believe in Allah, and bear witness that we have surrendered (unto Him)’” (3:52). The same call was made by Imam Al-Hussein (a.s.) when he felt that he was being betrayed by a lot of people who went back on their words. He asked: “Who would support us”, and his true supporters rushed to assure him: “We are with you, O son of the Messenger”.

The people are the same in both cases, the Message is the same and Allah is the same. Thus, when we remember the pains and sufferingsof Jesus Christ (a.s.), just as we remember those of Al-Hussein (a.s.) and his supporters, we say to the People of the Book: “Say: O people of the Book! Come to an agreement between us and you: that we shall worship none but Allah, and that we shall ascribe no partner unto Him, and that none of us shall take others for lords beside Allah” (3:64).

We also say to them: At a time we differ with you over Christ whom you consider the incarnation of God, while we do not and over the meaning of the oneness of Allah, we do not differ over the moral and spiritual values, nor do we differ over all the teachings that Jesus (a.s.) had preached, for we believe in all holy books: “We believe in what was revealed to us and what was revealed to you and our god and your god is but one” (46:29). So let us join hands against the unbelievers and let us stand against the oppressors instead of fighting and hating one another, especially that we live in a multi-confessional country whose confessions complement each other. It is a country that needs additional cooperation to let those who live in it be free and seek to work together for the sake of their common welfare.
