Grenfell Tower Vigil

SHAFAQNA – On the 27th July there was a multi-faith vigil for the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire.

After lighting of candles, Mrs Aliya Azam, representing the Al-Khoei Foundation made the opening remark  “United in sorrow and grief, we gather as one community. The fire that rages from the early hours of Wednesday 14th June devastated so many lives”.
Christian and other Muslim representatives echoed this sentiment and spoke of this appalling tragedy and how in the midst of death and trauma, we have gather together to remember those who have died, to think and pray for each other. This was followed by a two minute silence.
Young students from Al Zahra School read a very moving poem which stressed the importance of unity which they had composed, which received a big applause from the friends and relatives of the victims and the audience. Interfaith representatives from Muslim, Christian and Jewish traditions read readings from the respective scriptured followed by a short address by Bishop Angaelo, representing the President of Churches together in England.

Faith leaders, community organisations and relatives of the victims participated in lighting candles and the crowd joined in the ceremony. This was followed by a short hymm.
