How should a man and his fiancée behave during engagement period? The Grand Ayatollah Safi’s answer

SHAFAQNA – The Grand Ayatollah Safi answered a question about how a man and his fiancée must behave during engagement period.

Question: How should a man and his fiancée behave, should he fulfil all her requests?

The Grand Ayatollah Safi: Fiancée before Nikah ceremony is not Mahram, but when religiously based Nikah ceremony is performed, they are husband and wife. The duties which are allocated for each according to the religion and these have been mentioned in Risalah (Islamic propriety treaties), which they are obliged to follow, even though the official wedding ceremony has not taken place. In this situation both parties are entitled to benefit any enjoyment from each other; of course it is better to delay that part of the relationship which is usually carried out by custom after the wedding.
