Inuit group wants justice reforms to reflect high rates of abuse in Nunavut

SHAFAQNA (International Shia News Association)- An Inuit land claim group says Nunavut’s justice system must be reformed to reflect the high number of people in the territory who experience trauma or sexual violence.

A report from Nunavut Tunngavik (TOON-gah-vik) Incorporated quotes previous studies showing that one in four Inuit were sexually abused as children.

The report adds that about one in three were physically abused as youths.

It concludes those early experiences contribute to rates of violent and sexual crime that are many times higher than national averages.

The group wants schools, community justice committees and mental health workers to work more closely together.

It repeats a familiar call for more mental health resources in the territory.

And it wants more training for local efforts to bring offenders together with victims to achieve restorative justice.
