Iran – Attack on Shias during Muharram mourning kills 2

SHAFAQNA – An attack was reported at a Shiite religious site in Iran on Friday, and at least two people are reported killed.

Gunmen opened fire on a group of Shias who had gathered for the ritual mourning for Imam Hussein in the ongoing month of Muharram in Iran’s western province of Khuzestan, Press TV reported.

Two people were injured in the incident. Two people opened fire on the Shiite group from a car.

Authorities are investigating if it was a terror attack.

It’s not still clear whether the attack was a terrorist one,” provincial police official Colonel Rahman Mousavi was quoted saying.

Terror attacks on Shiites in the Shia-dominated country are rare.

The first Islamic month of Muharram began this week, and Shias will observe mourning to commemorate the martyrdom of Prophet Mohammed’s grandson Imam Hussein, who died in the battle of Karbala.
