SHAFAQNA- IQNA: Iran has started sending pilgrims to Syria to visit the holy shrine of Hazrat Zeinab (SA) on the outskirts of Damascus, An Iranian official said.

Speaking to IQNA, Hassan Palarak, head of the Committee for Reconstruction of Atabat (holy sites), said a travel agency named Utab Gasht has started sending the pilgrims to Damascus.

He said the holy shrine, known as Sayyidah Zaynab, had been damaged in attacks by Takfiri terrorists in recent years but renovation work has been duly done and new sections, including a guest house, have been added and will be soon inaugurated.

Conditions for pilgrims in the Syrian capital in terms of accommodation, security, etc, are good, added the official, who recently visited the Arab country.

Syria has been gripped by foreign-backed militancy since March 2011.

According to a report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.

In recent months, however, the Syrian government has managed to retake most of the areas occupied by the terrorists.

Before the start of the war, hundreds of thousands of Iranians and Shia Muslims from other countries would visit the holy shrine of Hazrat Zeinab (SA) every year.
