Iran, UK committed to reopen embassies in two capitals: Hammond

“We discussed bilateral relations and reaffirmed our commitment to reopen our embassies once the necessary practical arrangements can be made,” said the British foreign secretary.

SHAFAQNA- London, Sept 23 – The British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said after a meeting with his Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Javad Zarif, in New York on Monday that the two reaffirmed Tehran-London commitment to restore activities of their diplomatic missions in the two capitals.

 

According to a press release issued by British Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Hammond said he met the Iranian FM on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

 

The 69th session of the UN General Assembly began at UN Headquarters on September 16 (Tuesday) and its General Debate will open on Wednesday, September 24.

 

Based on the schedule, President Hassan Rouhani who arrived in New York on Monday will addres the UNGA Thursday morning as the second speaker.

 

Hammond added that Iran’s nuclear program was another topic discussed in his meeting with Zarif.

 

“I stressed that it remains in all our interests to reach an agreement which addresses international security concerns and begins to rebuild global confidence in Iran as an international partner.

 

“I was clear with Foreign Minister Zarif that the UK remains committed to securing a deal,” Hammond added.
