Iranian Center for International Criminal Law releases Yemen statement

SHAFAQNA – The following was made available to Shafaqna courtesy of the Iranian Center for International Criminal Law. In keeping with its mission statement, the Iranian Center for International Criminal Law released a statement denouncing human rights violations in Yemen.

At such a time when most international institutions have failed to live up to their obligations, many voices have risen in condemnation, calling for Justice to be served.

Following is the transcript:

Reaffirming that all Member States to the UN Human Rights Council have an obligation to promote and protect human rights and the duty to fulfill the obligations they have undertaken under the various international instruments in this field,

Deeply concerned that the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia leading a bombing campaign in Yemen since 2015 has constantly committed a wide range war crimes in the context of an intense armed conflict and has systematically violated the international humanitarian law and international human rights law in Yemen,

Having in mind that the war crimes are among the most serious crimes of concern to the international community as a whole and they must not go unpunished, Reaffirming further that all Member States of the United Nations Human Rights Council should uphold the highest standards in the promotion and protection of human rights,

Recalling the resolution 60/251 of 15 March 2006, particularly paragraph 8, which states that the General Assembly may suspend the rights of membership in the Human Rights Council of a member of the Council that commits gross and systematic violations of human rights,

1. Strongly recommends to the Human Rights Council to adopt a resolution requesting the United Nations General Assembly, in view of the gross and systematic violations of humanitarian law by the Saudi authorities, and in the consideration of the measures foreseen in OP8 of General Assembly resolution 60/251, to suspend the rights of membership in the Human Rights Council of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,

2. Strongly condemns the ongoing, widespread and systematic violations of human rights law of the people of Yemen in the war led by the Saudi Arabia;

3. Demands that the Government of Saudi Arabia to put immediately an end to its atrocities against the civilian population in Yemen,

4. Calls upon the UN Human Rights Council to dispatch a commission of inquiry or a fact-finding mandate to Yemen in order to document all violations of humanitarian law to pave the way of bringing those who are responsible to justice
