Iranian FM: Unfair sanctions not ‘gains’ for West

SHAFAQNA – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif reiterated that unfair sanctions imposed on Iran are not achievements for the West.

“We should not let western states to use sanctions as a tool to press other countries. Countries which are under illegal and cruel sanctions need to rely on their capabilities to take their own route,” he said in a meeting with the visiting Belarusian counterpart Vladimir Maki here in Tehran.

He also reiterated that the West has to come to understand that “Unfair sanctions which run counter to the international rules are not big gains for them.”

Maki, for his part, said his country has always regarded Iran as one of its friends. “We have always supported the right of the Islamic Republic of Iran in use of peaceful nuclear energy. We believe that the Iranian negotiating team has worked wisely.”

He also called for boosting bilateral economic cooperation between the two countries.

Tehran and Minsk have in recent months increased efforts to start a jump in mutual cooperation. The two states have recently widened their areas of economic cooperation. The two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on road transportation cooperation in March 2012.
