SHAFAQNA (International Shia News Association) Head of Strategic Research at the Expediency Council Ali Akbar Velayati said on Sunday that the United Nations is expected to identify the countries supporting terrorist groups and Daesh in the region. Velayati made the remarks in a meeting with UN special representative for Iraq Nikolai Mladenov.
The Islamic Republic of Iran has always backed the legitimate democratic government of Iraq, Velayati said.
He acknowledged the cultural and historical affinities and good-neighborly relations between Iran and Iraq.
Daesh Takfiri terrorist group along with other terrorist groups won support of some regional and western governments, the so-called advocates of campaign against terrorism, he said.
Some specific countries have provided financial and military support to terrorist groups in the region, Velayati said.
It is among responsibilities of the UN to identify those backing terrorist groups and Daesh Takfiri group in the region, he said adding that their logistical support from outside Iraq must be cut, the Iraqi nation and its army will defeat them.
The Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to cooperate in fight against the terrorist groups such as Daesh Takfiri, but, believes that no one should interfere in the domestic affairs of Iraq, he said.
UN special representative for Iraq Nikolai Mladenov, for his part, said he is pleased with the current visit to Tehran as one of the most important neighbors of Iraq as relations and cooperation between the two countries is very close.
The UN official said that all should do their best to fight terrorism in Syria, Iraq and Lebanon and condemn it.
The UN representative on Iraq said that the United Nations should play more active role in fight against terrorism.
There are some western nationals among Daesh terrorists who have joined the group voluntarily; he said adding that UN has no doubt to back people in Iraq, Syria and Lebanon.
Mladenov deplored the fact that the western governments interfere in domestic affairs of the regional countries such as in Syria and Iraq and blatantly make statement that their governments should change.
