IRNA/German deputy parliamentary president en route to Iran

SHAFAQNA – German deputy parliamentary president, Claudia Roth is en route to Iran for a five-day visit, according to Roth’s personal website.

Roth will lead a parliamentary delegation to Tehran and Tabriz for talks with Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani and his deputy Mohammed Hassan Aboutourabifard, in addition to Iranian deputy president for women and family affairs, Shahindokht Moulaverdi and Iran’s vice-president and head of the environmental organization, Massoumeh Ebtekar.

The prominent Green lawmaker will also meet with Iranian vice-president on European and American affairs, Majid Takht-Ravanchi and legislators representing religious minorities as well as civic representatives. The trip is aimed at deepening parliamentary ties and further stressing Iran’s regional importance in the violence-stricken Mideast, Roth was quoted saying.

A former leader of the pro-environment Green party, Roth will also tour the shrinking Lake Oroumieh, which is in danger of completely drying up because of climate change and nearby farms using it for irrigation and the damming of rivers.
