Is custom of the area or work place effective on limits set by religion for Hijab? The Grand Ayatollah Javadi Amoli’s answers

SHAFAQNA – The Grand Ayatollah Javadi Amoli answered questions about limits set for Hijab by religion.

Question: Is the custom of the area or work place effective on limits set by religion for Hijab? For example, nomad women at certain age plait their hair and some are out, or women in south of Iran, according to the custom of the area do not wear socks, or women who when working on the agricultural land, pull a bit of their trousers up, or women working as civil servants whilst working some of their arms may become apparent?

The Grand Ayatollah Javadi Amoli:

  1. The necessary limits of Hijab for all women are the same at any time or any place, unless in emergency or treatment.
  2. Easiness does not mean necessity.
  3. In cases of occupational necessity even when covering may not be Wajib for the woman, but (at the same time) looking by non-Mahram also is not allowed.
