SHAFAQNA – The Grand Ayatollah Mohammad Saeed Hakim answered questions about changing names for converts to Islam.
Question: My name is Cruz, and my Islamic name is Mohammad. If I decide to change my name into Islamic name, must I also change my family name (surname)? I know that I must not change my family name, but my family name is a Christine name, Cruz means” the resident near the cross”. Therefore, must I change my name to Assad or not?
The Grand Ayatollah Hakim: It is not compulsory to change your family name and even your name, and the change of names is often for the ease of integration with other Muslims.
