Is the host responsible for payment of Fitriyah for guests? The Grand Ayatollah Sistani’s Fatwa

SHAFAQNA – The Grand Ayatollah Sistani answered a question about the duty of the host regarding Fitriyah.

Question: If before Eidul-Fitr a person travels from his/her town to another town and stays in someone’s house; must the guest pay own Fitriyah or the host must pay it?

The Grand Ayatollah Sistani: It is Wajib for the host to pay Fitriyah for the guest who comes to his house before the sunset of the night of Eidul-Fitr and (the guest) is considered as one of those who eats in his house even though temporarily. For example: The guest who comes to the house of the host and stays there at night, and the host provides needed facilities for the comfort of the guest, and pays for guest’s expenses, even if the guest does not eat anything or does Iftar with own food; it is Wajib for the host to pay guest’s Zakat-i-Fitrah.
