SHAFAQNA – Terrorists with the Takfiri ISIL group have reportedly executed at least 6,000 people in the sprawling western Iraq province of al-Anbar since late 2013. Media reports quoted official sources in Anbar as saying that the executions have taken place mainly in the city of Fallujah as well as the provincial capital, Ramadi, which are still under control of the ISIL terrorists. The United Nations has said ISIL’s advance in the province and fierce fighting have forced tens of thousands of people to flee the region. According to the UN Humanitarian Agency, more than 90,000 people have fled Ramadi and three nearby villages.
The Iraqi Army backed by volunteers has launched an operation to stop ISIL from advancing further into Ramadi.
The media reports also said at least eight mass graves had been discovered in presidential palaces in Tikrit, the capital of the Salahuddin province north of Baghdad.
Tikrit was seized by the ISIL in June last year. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said last month that units of government forces, backed by Shia and Sunni volunteer forces, had managed to retake its control.
ISIL launched an offensive in Iraq in June last year and took control of Mosul, the country’s second-largest city, before sweeping through parts of the country’s heartland.
