SHAFAQNA -One more youth was killed in restive Kashmir Valley on Saturday as protests continued unabated despite a stringent curfew clamped to stem the rage that was sparked by the death of a 22 year old militant commander of Hizbul Mujahideen eight days ago. The new death this time in North Kashmir town of Kupwara, took the death toll to 45. Around 3000 protestors are reported to have been injured many of them maimed for life.

On Saturday the government led by Mehbooba Mufti which is backed by the BJP went a step ahead and imposed a blanket ban on the publication of local newspapers. The state has already snapped internet and mobile phone services. This despite a life crippling curfew that is in force since July 9.

According to reports, a youth identified as Showkat Ahmed Malik, received serious injuries when he was hit by a bullet after a group of protestors allegedly attacked a police post at Hutmulla Kupwara, frontier district close to the Line of Control (LoC).

The death toll with this fresh killing has surged to 45 including a policeman who was drowned after protestors pushed his vehicle into river Jehlum and two civilians who died as a result of drowning after being chased by security forces.

Some 3000 persons, including several hundred, security personnel have been injured in the bloody clashes during the past eight days.

Elsewhere, skirmishes between protestors and security forces continued throughout the day across all the districts of the valley. Security personnel resorting to severe cane charging could be seen chasing the protestors.

Strict curfew was in place in old Srinagar while people moved freely in civil lines areas, however, shops and business establishments remained shut.

Residents of Brein Nishat in Srinagar alleged that Jammu Kashmir Armed Police (JKAP) ransacked many houses and beat up inmates after some youth there used loud speakers of a local mosque to broadcast pro-freedom numbers.

They further alleged that police lobbed tear-smoke shells into the premises of some houses creating panic in the area. People took to streets and staged massive protest against the forces personnel.

The situation in South Kashmir remained relatively peaceful as according to reports strict curfew was in place.

A police official described the overall situation as ‘peaceful’ in almost all the parts of Kashmir Valley.
