Keeping in touch with close relatives who do not observe religious rules / the Grand Ayatollah Khamenei’s Fatwa

SHAFAQNA – The Grand Ayatollah Khamenei answered a question about keeping in touch with close relatives who do not observe religious rules.

Question: Half of my close relatives do not observe Hijab and in gatherings do not cover their hair and say the human being’s heart must be pure and things like that. I also grew with them and it is four years that I am trying to observe religious rules, I have reduced my connection with them and see them for couple of times a year for the sake of keeping in touch. Now, I do not know whether to cut my connection with them or continue in the same way?

The Grand Ayatollah Khamenei: There is no problem if socializing with them does not lead to committing sin and also is not approving their non-observance of religious rules. But at the same time it is necessary to observe religious rules, and if you think cutting ties with them temporarily will cause them not to commit sin; it is Wajib, for the sake of enjoining good and prohibiting bad. And it must be noted that cutting ties with relatives is not allowed. And keeping in touch with relatives is not limited to socializing with them, but there are other ways like, telephone, letter, and things like that are also considered as keeping in touch.
