The Iranian people from all walks of life went to mosques on Sunday to participate in celebrations marking Eid al-Adha, which is one of the most important religious holidays in Islam.
SHAFAQNA – Millions of Iranian Muslims across the country are celebrating Eid al-Adha (the Feast of Sacrifice), which marks the culmination of the annual Hajj pilgrimage.
A mass prayer was also held in the Iranian capital, Tehran, with the participation of people and high-ranking officials of the country.
Muslims traditionally celebrate Eid al-Adha with the sacrifice of animals like sheep, rams, goats and cattle. The act commemorates Prophet Abraham’s (PBUH) submission to divine order to sacrifice his son, Ismail (PBUH). However, God provided Prophet Abraham with a ram to sacrifice instead after he successfully passed the divine test.
Millions of Muslims around the world also celebrated the auspicious occasion and gathered in congregations in the early morning for Eid al-Adha prayers.
The major rituals of the Hajj are performed during a five-day period from the 8th through the 12th of Dhu al-Hijjah in the Muslim lunar calendar.
The Hajj pilgrimage is a religious ritual, which must be performed at least once by every able-bodied Muslim who can afford it.
