Motorway are shut close to the UK’s largest army garrison as police investigate explosion

SHAFAQNA (Shia International News Association) – British Police have closed the A1 motorway at Catterick in North Yorkshire after an explosion was heard around 3am. Both slip roads to the area are shut and diversions are in place, with motorists warned to avoid the area. Catterick Garrison is the British army’s largest training establishment, covering 2,400 acres and 20,000 acres of training land.

Marne Barracks provides a base for Headquarters 4th Infantry Brigade and Headquarters North East which forms part of 1st (United Kingdom) Division. It is the home for the School of Infantry and Infantry Training Centre, where Phase One and Two training is conducted for every British infantry soldier including Gurkhas. There are more than 13,000 personnel, military, civilian and their dependants, living and working in the area.

A garrison spokesman said police were leading the inquiry and did not have any information about how close the explosion was to the barracks. North Yorkshire Police said the closure was a “precautionary measure” while they investigate. Six miles of motorway are affected, according to the UK’s Highways Agency.
