Muslim judicial council ‘deeply disturbed’ by Cape Town mosque shooting

SHAFAQNA-

MJC spokesperson Mishka Davies said on Friday that the organisation was “deeply disturbed at the tragic incident” that unfolded at the mosque on Tuesday.

“To our understanding, Brother Yusuf Andile Silwana was busy with maintenance on his car inside the mosque’s boundary when he was approached by four males with the intent of stealing from him,” said Davies in a statement.

“Brother Yusuf got into a verbal argument with the men. One of them pulled out a gun and shot at point-blank range. Another congregant was hurt in the incident and taken to hospital.”

Community members claimed that the shooter was a known criminal who had recently been released from prison.

“Our mosques, synagogues and churches are sacred spaces where congregants find refuge. We cannot allow these sacred spaces to be violated by people whose only objective is to cause harm,” said Davies.

“We therefore are requesting police to make urgent arrests in this case so that no one else is hurt by this person or any of his conspirators in future.”

Two days before the mosque shooting, an off-duty 40-year-old police sergeant was shot and killed in Site B, Khayelitsha. Three unidentified gunmen robbed him of a cellphone.
