Neelofa to file suit in Vietnam over hijab knock-offs

SHAFAQNA- Popular Malaysian actress Noor Neelofa Mohd Noor (pic) is taking legal action against a textile company in Vietnam for copying her hijab (headscarf) designs.

The creator of Naelofar Hijab said work is ongoing to register her trademark in Vietnam to allow for the legal action to be taken.

A spokesman for her legal team confirmed that they are working with Vietnamese authorities and collecting more evidence to be used in the case.

“The trademark is about to be approved for registration in Vietnam.

“After that, we will initiate legal action against the textile company that has been copying the Naelofar Hijab label,” the spokesman said when met at the Selangor Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Department office here on Wednesday.

Neelofa, who was also present, said her company found out last year that Naelofar Hijab knock-offs were on sale in nine stores in the Klang Valley.

”We issued them warning letters and calls requesting them to stop selling the goods.

”However, all of the warnings and advice were not heeded.

”We have no choice but to report to the consumerism ministry because substandard goods have affected the brand and our genuine distributors,” she said.

The knock-offs are sold from RM30 each, about half the price of the genuine item.

Neelofa noted that products under her label are entirely Malaysian-made and she has never appointed any foreign manufacturer.

Earlier, Selangor consumerism department director Abdul Rosik Yakub told a press conference that 79 pieces of imitation headscarves were seized from two stores in Kajang and Gombak.

”We raided the two stores following complaints and seized the imitation goods worth some RM7,100.

”We are investigating other stores involved in the case,” he said.
