Nigeria Muslim community accuses government of failure to protect citizens

SHAFAQNA (Shia International News Association)- Nigeria’s top Islamic body has accused the government of failure to protect citizens from attacks by Takfiri extremists, urging people to defend themselves under law.

The Jama’atu Nasri Islam (JNI), the umbrella group for the country’s Muslim community, made the announcement in a statement on Sunday, urging Nigerian authorities “to be manifestly committed to the responsibility of protecting the lives and properties of Nigerians” from attacks by Takfiri Boko Haram militants.

The Muslim community, based in northern city of Kaduna, also urged Muslims to “take all defensive measures within the purview of the laws to protect themselves since government has clearly failed.”

The top Islamic body further criticized as “ineffective” the state of emergency declared by the Nigerian government in three northeastern states of Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa since May 2013.

“Why is it that any time the ineffective state of emergency is about to elapse and an extension is being sought, attacks are carried with sophistication?” the JNI asked in the statement.

The top Islamic group issued the statement after Friday’s coordinated bomb and gun attacks on the Grand Mosque in the northern city of Kano, situated 423 kilometers (262 miles) north of the capital Abuja.

At least 120 people lost their lives and about 270 others were injured in the attacks which took place shortly after hundreds of people gathered to listen to a Friday Prayers sermon at the mosque.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blasts. However, Nigerian officials often blame such assaults on the Takfiri Boko Haram militants.
