No more sanctions on Iran?

SHAFAQNA – Western officials have claimed that the major world powers have quietly started to talk about a UN Security Council resolution to lift UN sanctions imposed on Iran if a nuclear deal is struck with Tehran. Such a move could make it difficult for the US Congress to cancel an agreement.

The talks between China, Britain, France, Russia, the US and Germany with Iran are taking place before difficult negotiations will resume next week on restricting Tehran’s nuclear capabilities.

US Secretary of State John Kerry told Congress on Wednesday that a nuclear deal with Iran will not be legally binding which means that future American presidents can choose not to implement it. The point was emphasised on Monday by 47 Republican US senators who sent an open letter to Iranian leaders warning them that any agreement could be ignored after President Barack Obama leaves office in January 2017.

However, a Security Council resolution on a nuclear deal with Iran, say Western officials, could be binding. This would undermine Republican efforts to scupper the deal between Washington and Tehran.
