Not fasting due to probable harm / the Grand Ayatollah Khamenei’s Fatwa

SHAFAQNA – The Grand Ayatollah Khamenei answered a question about not fasting due to probable harm.

Question: If a person for the sake of a strong excuse, consider it probable for 50% that fasting is not Wajib for him/her, and does not fast for the same reason, but later it becomes clear that fasting has been Wajib for him/her; what is the ruling on Qadha fasting and Kaffarah?

The Grand Ayatollah Khamenei: If the intentional Iftar (breaking fast) of the day of the blessed Month of Ramadhan is when the person thinks it is probable that fasting is not Wajib for him/her, according to supposition in the question, in addition to Qadha fasting, Kaffarah is also Wajib for him/her. But if Iftar is due to the fear of harm, and the fear has also a logical source, Kaffarah is not Wajib, but Qadha fasting is Wajib for him/her.
