Number of Bahrainis stripped of citizenship surpasses 600 mark

SHAFAQNA – The head of the Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy (BIRD) Sayed Ahmed AlWadaei reported that the number of Bahrainis stripped of their citizenship in the last six years has surpassed the 600 mark.

AlWadaei tweeted on Wednesday that 602 Bahrainis have had their nationality revoked since 2012.

Manama has stripped a total of 96 people of their Bahraini citizenship this year alone. Last year, 156 lost their nationality, compared to 90 the year before.

The draconian policy is part of Manama’s intensifying clampdown on dissent.

The right to a nationality is enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights to which Bahrain is a state party.
