Offering peace and salutation to Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

SHAFAQNA (International Shia News Agency) – Offering peace and salutation to the most eminent of men is a God-pleasing deed which God, Himself, has taken the lead in that and commanded the angels to offer peace and salutation to him. He says in the Holy Quran: “surely Allah and his angels bless the Prophet. O you who believe! Call for blessings on him and salute him with a (becoming) salutation.”(1)

Offering peace and salutation to the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) is a desirable (Mustahab) act in all situations and at all times and in the noble verse God commands us to do so without determining a special place or time for doing that. It is also better to offer peace and salutation to the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) at the time of calling to prayer (Azan) and reciting the Holy Quran, when we hear his name or mention it.

The method of offering peace and salutation to the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) has been narrated by Abd al-Rahman ibn Lili who quotes from Ka`b ibn `Ajzah from the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) .This tradition has been recorded in the most authentic books of Hadith known by Sunnis. We interpret a part of it here:

Ka`b ibn `Ajzah said: “we asked the Holy Prophet about the method of offering peace and salutation to him (s.a.w.) and his Household. He said: ‘O God! Offer Your peace and salutation to Muhammad and his descendants the same way as You offered Your peace and salutation to Abraham and his descendants; surely you are Laudable and Glorious, O God! Shower Your blessings on Muhammad and his descendants as You showered your blessings on Abraham and his descendants; surely you are Laudable and Glorious.’”(2) It is cleared by the tradition that we should offer peace and salutation to the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) and his descendants to be complete blessings (Salawat) and be in agreement with the order of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.).

Ibn Hajar Hiythami quotes from the Prophet (s.a.w.) that he said: “Don’t be incomplete in offering peace and salutation to me.” When asked what he meant by ‘incomplete’ blessings, he said: ‘Do not say, ‘O God, offer Your peace and salutation to Muhammad,’ but say, ‘O God, offer Your peace and salutation to Muhammad and his descendants.(3) (Shi`ah offers peace and salutatorian to Muhammad and his descendants, complete blessings, and it is according to the tradition recorded in Sahih of Bukhari, the most authentic of the Sunnis books of Hadith.) it is also better to say “As You offer Your peace and salutation to Abraham and his descendants” after offering peace and salutation to the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.)and his descendants but sometimes for being brief, this statement is not mentioned as the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) in the second tradition has not mentioned it. Moreover, it can be said that “As You offer Your peace and salutation to Abraham and his descendants” is not a part of offering peace and salutation to the Prophet (s.a.w.) but it is a pattern for doing that. i.e, as you offer peace and salutation to Abraham and his descendants, offer peace and salutation to Muhammad and his descendants and don’t separate them from each other.(4)
